At Shat Acres, we are committed to raising our cattle humanely with the utmost care and respect. Our fold currently numbers around seventy-five animals. Shat Acres Highland Cattle is not only the oldest registered fold of Highland cattle in the US, but also the oldest closed herd. Highland cattle graze outside the Farm Stay's spacious deck and farm activities are offered for guests to interact with the cattle and learn about our Regenerative Agriculture practices if they wish. ![]() Highland House Farm Stay is a brand new, three bedroom, 2.5 baths, sleeps six, CleanAir home on the Plainfield property. Because we know how much joy, peace and comfort Highland cattle offer, we have added a Farm Stay option where guests can gaze at and commune with our Highland cows and calves. Highland cattle, with their long hair and long horns are truly majestic and awe-inspiring-unmatched by any other breed of bovine. Little did we know that what started as a small-scale operation, expecting to sell just a few animals each year, would grow into something extraordinary that would help sustain the Highland fold Ray's dad had started so long ago. She knew in her heart that this breed had something truly special to offer, as Highland beef is unsurpassed in flavor, tenderness and health benefits. In 2007 Ray and Janet decided to share the exceptional 100% Grass Fed and Finished Beef their Highland cattle produced with the world. Driven by love for our respective hometowns, Greensboro Bend and Plainfield, we proudly named our beef brand Greenfield Highland Beef. Last but not least we have lots of tiny little bats in summer swooping around the trees.Our passion for offering Highland beef was ignited when Janet, after reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, had a life-changing experience tasting 100% Grass Fed and Finished Highland Beef. The swifts and swallows return in May too and nest in the eaves of the house and the barn. Listen out for the barn and tawny owls hooting in the trees at night time. Throughout the year you will see pheasants, buzzards, black grouse, ravens and red kites. We also have two Oxford Sandy and Black pigs.ĭuring the summer months look out for the Osprey who fish on the Lake of Menteith and fly over the farm. Larry in particular enjoys a head and ear rub so if you book a farm tour you will have the chance to get up close to them and give them a bucket of feed. You will see them pecking around the cottages during your stay and if you’d like to feed them please ask for a little bag of dried worms. Nether Glenny is home to 3 beautiful peacocks: Mildred and two chicks. In saying that if Matt needs to move some cattle from one field to another he will take Gem along to help. They have the title of ‘working dogs’ however they are more accustomed to wonderful walks in the hills and afternoon snoozes by the fire. Our 3 Australian Cattle dogs are called Max, Jack and Gem. We have chosen native breeds which can withstand the harsh winters in Scotland and our cows are grass fed. Our herd is small and growing year on year. ![]() We have 4 Highland Cows that we cross with a Short Horn Bull.
